UNIC Islamabad commemorates International Day of Democracy

United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Islamabad and the Centre for Civic Education Pakistan (CCE) organized a democracy quiz competition to mark the first International Day of Democracy.  The competition was held for university students and took place at a local hotel in Islamabad on 15 September.

The Executive Director of CCE opened the session, welcomed the students and briefed them about democracy. Mr. Tauseeq Hyder, a renowned anchor person, moderated the session. The quiz competition consisted of three rounds of questions focused on the topics of international and national democracy and the role of democratic institutions and civil society in promoting democracy. First place went to students from Fatimah Jinnah Women University, Rawalpindi, second place to International Islamic University, Islamabad and third place to Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad.

Ms. Ishrat Rizvi, the National Information Officer of UNIC Islamabad, congratulated the university students for their active participation in the competition and read the UN Secretary-General's message for the Day.

The Assistant Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) delivered a presentation entitled "Democratic Governance and Human Development." Following his presentation two documentaries entitled "March of Democracy" and "Struggle for Democratic Pakistan" were screened. The documentaries were produced by the Centre for Civic Education Pakistan.
